Results: Hudson Valley Ribfest

The smoke has cleared and the results are in, neither The Smoke 'N Barrel nor Ma's Que Crew won. We did, however, have a great time despite the fly epidemic and the torrential rain.
Brian was in charge of the chicken and the brisket and I was in charge of pork and ribs. Neither one of placed in the top ten in the four categories.
Congratulations to Grand Champions: Meat at Slims (http://www.meatatslims.com/)  and Reserve Grand Champions: Dizzy Pig (http://www.dizzypigbbq.com/) .

Here's how we ranked:

Overall: 39 out of 70

Chicken: 28 out of 70
Ribs: 58 out of 70
Pork: 26 out of 70
Brisket: 33 out of 70

Full contest results can be found at http://www.kcbs.us/

Our best score was in pork, which was my responsibility. It seems that my pork recipe is good, but not championship good. I will continue to work on tweaking my pork cooking method over the winter so that it is grand champion caliber by the spring.

Upcoming Events

The Smoke 'N Barrel is teaming up with Brian of Ma's Que Crew this weekend in New Paltz, NY to compete in the Hudson Valley Ribfest at the Hudson Valley Fairgrounds. There will be 70 teams competing in this event, all fighting to be the Grand Champion. Let's see if I can keep a consistent score in pork, and up my skills in the chicken, ribs and beef categories. If you keep the Kosher Salt away from me, it shouldn't be difficult to do better in the chicken category, but we'll see. Check out the website: http://www.hudsonvalleyribfest.org/

There is another local competition over Labor Day Weekend called A Taste of Tanger, being held at the Tanger Outlets in Deer Park, on Sat and Sun, September 4th and 5th. The Smoke 'N Barrel is still on the fence about entering into this competition. I really want to enter, but I'm not crazy about spending my final weekend of the summer away from my family and friends. If I don't compete, I will be having a bbq/pool party at my house on Saturday. What's on the menu? BBQ! So, if i'm not bbq'in in a competition, I'll be bbq'in my backyard. I guess I will base my decision on the results of this weekend. The Battle of the BBQ Brethren 2010

y first competition was The Battle of the BBQ Brethren IV held at the Suffolk County PAL in Holtsville, NY on August 7th and 8th, 2010. My team, The Smoke 'N Barrel, consisted of myself, my Step-Father Chris and my Uncle Lenny.
Before I get into the competition, let me give you a little history about myself. I have been grilling and barbequing in my backyard for a long time, but never in a competition, so I didn't know what to expect. About a year ago, I joined the forum website http://www.bbq.brethren.com/. It was the knowledgeable and friendly men and women that I met on this website that encouraged me to enter into a competition. I read through numerous threads about barbecue, food prep, competition, site setup, etc. Without the help of the brethren, I wouldn't have been as organized and prepared as I was.
I learned so many things and had such a good time at my first event that I now have the itch to keep entering into bbq competitions. The fact that I took 4th place out of 37 teams in the pork category and won my first trophy also helps. Looking forward to my next competition, A Taste of Tanger.
Here are some pictures from the event.
